The 2nd annual Beti Bike Bash mountain bike race has added more opportunities for women and girls to be involved with the June event. In addition to the women’s only mountain bike race on Sunday, June 12, 2011, women and girls alike can attend Rebecca Rusch’s SRAM sponsored mountain bike clinic on Saturday, June 11 at Bear Creek Lake Park in Lakewood. Rebecca and other SRAM female athletes will go
over mountain bike skills, race preparation, a pre-ride of the Beti Bike Bash course, as well having an open Q&A with professional athletes. Women have the option of signing up for one or both days. The cost for Saturday is $10, which covers the park entrance fee and a $5 donation to Mountain2Mountain.org.
The Beti Bike Bash has also been awarded a grant from the Sporting Woman Community Fund to support 20 junior girls (18 years old and under). The grant will be used to cover the entry fee for selected girls at this year’s Beti Bike Bash. “The Sporting Woman Community Fund is interested in supporting female athletes of all ages and abilities and getting young women interested in mountain biking is a sure way to add confidence and inner strength to meet any challenge in life”, explains Lisa Taggart of the Sporting Woman Community Fund.
“We wanted to provide ample opportunity for girls to get interested in mountain bike racing. We realize that in difficult economic times, recreation may be the first place that families will cut back. There is a lot of momentum in Colorado right now with the Colorado High School Cycling league promoting racing at the high school level”, says Team YetiBeti’s Amy Thomas. “This contest will hopefully provide an opportunity for a young girl to try a mountain bike race. A women’s only event is more about encouraging one another, rather than beating one another.”
Heather Irmiger (Trek/Subuar) and Rebecca Rusch (Red Bull/Specialized/SRAM) will chose the 20 best essays. The contest is open now until May 10, 2011. Winners will be notified via email by May 15, 2011.
