With so many bike tools on the market, it’s not too often that we really get excited about one. But after using the Hayes Feel R Gage for the first time, we couldn’t help but think “We wish we had this tool 10 years ago!”
The Feel R Gage is a brilliant, but simple tool that makes adjusting disc brake calipers a breeze. The process for adjusting a hydraulic brake is very easy: loosen the caliper bolts, squeeze the lever, and then tighten the bolts before releasing the lever. This should adjust the caliper correctly every time; leaving an even gap between the rotor and both pads. Any one who’s tried this, though, can tell you that it doesn’t always work the way it should. Sometimes one piston doesn’t fully retract, or maybe one brake pad is more worn than the other, both situations will result in the caliper not being centered and you having to repeat the process.
By using the Feel R Gage, you can do it right the first time. Simply slide the two silver arms between the pads and rotor, and then repeat the above steps for adjusting the caliper. Once you remove the tool you will see an even gap on both sides of the pad. The Feel R Gage also has a secondary use: one ended of the tool body is beveled and can be used to separate your brake pads should you accidentally squeeze the lever when the wheel is off the bike. No more will you have to pry the pads apart with a screwdriver, only to find that you horribly marred them up doing so.
GBL Last Word: At home or on the trail, the Feel R Gage is an absolute must-have for any rider with disc brakes. It’s small enough to stash in your hydration pack, and with a $20 price tag, it’s hard to beat.
