The most ubiquitous bicycle tool is easily the multi tool. Nearly every tool company makes one, and most companies offer several models. This week’s review focuses on one that stands out for its ingenuity: the Wheels Manufacturing Hanger Multi Tool.
Upon first glance, this multi tool looks similar to many other tools on the market. It has the most common sized hex wrenches, two screwdrivers, and a torx M25 wrench. It’s lightweight and folds up to a compact size. Look closer, however, and you will notice what sets it apart. Attached to one side of the tool via a thumb nut is a universal emergency derailleur hanger.
A bent or broken derailleur hanger is an unfortunate, but all-too-common occurrence whether you ride road or mountain. Regardless of the brand of bicycle you ride, with the Hanger Multi Tool you won’t have to worry should the situation arise. Simply remove your rear derailleur and broken hanger, and then attach the emergency hanger using the quick release skewer. Ideally you’ll need to adjust your limit screws to prevent shifting off the cassette, however if you don’t want to bother with that, you can still ride as long as you are careful to say near the middle of the cassette.
GBL Last Word: A simple, compact multi tool that offers piece-of-mind for only $40 is hard to beat. No one expects to break a derailleur hanger, but if it happens the Hanger Multi Tool is sure to get you home.
