If there ever was a tool that bike shop employees lust for, it’s the Phil Wood Spoke Cutting and Threading Machine.
Its name says it all. It will cut and thread almost any spoke to near perfect tolerances. Though it costs nearly as much as a high-end bike, it is worth every penny. With this machine, bike shops don’t have to stock multiple boxes of different types and sizes of spokes, only to figure out that they never quite have what you need.
Wheel builds and spoke replacements are a breeze when you have the ability to manufacturer the spoke you need on the spot. Unless you have a wheel with proprietary spokes, like Mavic or Industry Nine wheels, this machine can cut and thread a replacement spoke in seconds. There are less sophisticated (and cheaper) spoke machines on the market, but none even begin to rival the Phil Wood machine. This machine is not only faster and easier to use, but it is far more precise than other machines. It is also made in the USA, which is something we see less and less of these days.
GBL Last Word: It’s certainly not cheap, but it’s a great addition to any service department.
