More than 200 local events will host well over 20,000 kids and families this Saturday for the eighth edition of Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day. “This is the biggest event we know of that encourages kids to get outside and ride bikes in natural settings,” said Mike Van Abel, IMBA’s executive director. “IMBA is committed to providing the kind of quality mountain bike experiences that make a good impression on riders of all ages.”
Most of the rides are free to the public — just show up with your kids (bring your own bikes and helmets) to enjoy a low-key, guided ride on local trails. Find a Take a Kid Mountain Biking Event near you with this online map.
Rides will be conducted around the globe, including Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Mexico and South Africa. In the United States, IMBA is pleased to conduct rides in a variety of spectular settings, including scheduled events in five National Park Service (NPS) properties, and areas managed by the United States Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The NPS and BLM provide partnership support for the event, joining the Children and Nature Network and the Outdoor Alliance for Kids. Industry sponsors include CLIF Bar, Shimano, Specialized and Trek.

Most of the registered events feature great freebies for the kids who ride, including race plates, healthy energy foods for kids and other giveaways. From Friday to Monday (10-1 to 10-3) anyone who posts videos and photos on IMBA’s Facebook page will be entered into a raffle to win youth-sized bicycles, kid’s riding gear and other prizes.
IMBA recently teamed up with the social video app BlipSnips to create a way for you to share Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day moments with friends and family. Here’s how it works:
• Download the BlipSnips app (currently available only on iPhone).
• Use BlipSnips to shoot a video
• Save your video with the #TAKMBD hashtag in the title
