Saturday, Oct. 1, marked the eighth celebration of Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day. Recognized across the globe with over 230 events registered — including rides in Australia, Canada, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico and South Africa — this year’s edition was dedicated to the White House “Let’s Move Outside!” initiative. IMBA subsequently encourages people of all ages to take the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) pledge.
New for 2011, IMBA requested participants to post photos and videos to our Facebook page, qualifying them to win great prizes; winners included David Malwitz, Sherry Thiessen, and Bradley Renick. Grand prize winners Adele Kofler (VA) and Steph Dorney (PA) received new Specialized kids bikes. Specialized and Trek Bicycle dealers supported the event by encouraging local bike retailers to host events, joining the traditional ranks of IMBA-affiliated chapters and clubs, as well as Trips for Kids chapters and Boy Scouts of America troops.
IMBA enjoyed great event support from diverse partners, including the National Park Service (NPS). NPS units hosting rides this year included Golden Gate, Delaware Water Gap, Great Smoky Mountains, Mammoth Cave and Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.
The bicycle industry provided event sponsorship from Shimano, CLIF Kid, Trek and Specialized. Other partners included Outdoors Alliance for Kids (OAK), and the Children Nature Network. Hearty thanks to all of our Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day patners!
