Lets Talk Compression

Training for an endurance event often requires workouts on consecutive days or even within one day. During peak training periods you may find yourself having a difficult time recovering between subsequent training sessions, which in turn decreases their quality. I found this to be the case when my triathlon training schedule required me to do back to back long runs and rides. Often times I would head out for a run after a long ride and my legs felt like dead weight.

When I came across RecoFit compression components I was skeptical. I had seen runners on the trail with the calf sleeves and immediately disregarded them because of the potential for awkward tan lines. However, as someone with a history of tight calves and IT bands, resulting in plantar fasciitis and patellofemoral syndrome (pain behind the kneecap), my demanding training schedule was leaving me willing to consider the idea.

Based on the theory behind T.E.D. hose stockings for post surgery patients, sedentary individuals, and those prone to blood clots, compression components are designed to increase circulation and improve the rate of blood flow to the heart. Improved circulation also promotes the removal of waste products and reduces inflammation, which can result in a faster recovery. Wearing compression components while exercising also has the effect of reducing vibration, which has been shown to reduce energy output. RecoFit compression components use a left and right zone specific design made with a carbon-based fabric that also provides ribbed massage, moisture management and breathability. Their product line includes calf sleeves, full leg compressors, arm coolers and shin-splint therapy sleeves.

I chose to go with the RecoFit Leg Compressors with the intention of wearing them in the comfort of my own home while sleeping or relaxing after a long ride. I put them on as soon as I got home and immediately felt a pulsation of blood through my tired legs, that just simply felt…good. I continued to wear the compression tights on nights between consecutive rides and runs and found my legs feeling more refreshed. Only after a week of wearing the compression tights was I convinced that they were going to be an excellent recovery tool for my training schedule. I also think they would be great after a long day skiing on the slopes, hiking or travelling for races.
