One To Watch :: Katie Sodergren

.
I’ve been asked several times about strategies for getting more women into cycling, specifically mountain biking and mountain bike racing. After many years of pondering this question, I’ve come to the conclusion that collegiate racing may be the best tool for getting girls involved.  Although high school teams are also starting to have a great impact, until those are widespread, collegiate teams are our greatest opportunity to turn more women on to the sport of cycling. Collegiate racing is successful [...]

Ride Food: Banana Oat Bars

.
At the end of every summer riding season, my motivator starts to sputter. While mid-summer I thrive on long, high-altitude rides, my rides start to lose length quicker than the days lose sunlight in the dog days of August. As the race season tapers off, so does my motivation to eat well, so instead of packing my bag full of treats that will actually fuel me on all-day rides, I shove some cookies or a Snickers bar in my bag [...]

Ride Food :: Sweet Potato Chips

.
This isn’t exactly a recipe; it’s more of a snack idea with a million variations on it.  I’m in the business of making yummy, healthy treats to eat on the bike.  These have saved me on more than one occasion. This spring, I’ve embarked on two long, but not outrageously long, mountain bike races in the 15-40 hour range. These routes have had minimal re-supply options so I’ve started both with all the food I’d need, plus ‘emergency’ calories. When [...]

There is one thing I really miss about ‘normal’ eating since I committed to the Paleo Diet: pastries.  As a bike rider, there’s nothing better than riding to some location, stopping at the local coffee shop and buying a cup of joe accompanied with a giant scone or muffin.   I’m not saying I never do this anymore, but I try not to make it a multi-week occurrence like it used to be. Thus, I’m presented with a problem. If [...]

Ride Food :: Coffee-laced Almond Cookies

.
Over the years of making home-made ride snacks, I’ve created some verifiable disasters… bars that wouldn’t stick together, imitation Lara bars wrapped in foil that would subsequently explode and coat everything in its vicinity with goop, and some combinations of ingredients that just simply didn’t taste good. I’ve learned that just because I think something tastes good, it doesn’t actually mean that it tastes good. It’s something along the lines of ‘a taste that only a mother/creator could love’. Recently [...]
