Tool Tuesday :: Homemade Sharpened Spoke

.
Sometimes a good tool is very complicated. Sometimes it’s rather simple. In the case of my favorite homemade tool, it’s the latter.   It may seem silly to review a sharpened spoke, but this is one tool that I find indispensable. Its many uses include: -Opening the fresh-cut end of cable housing -Digging out dirt that’s crammed into bolt heads -Unclogging presta valves -Removing thorns from tires -Scoring a line for cutting seatposts and handlebars -Using as a pick for [...]

Tool Tuesday :: Phil Wood Spoke Cutting and Threading Machine

.
If there ever was a tool that bike shop employees lust for, it’s the Phil Wood Spoke Cutting and Threading Machine.   Its name says it all. It will cut and thread almost any spoke to near perfect tolerances. Though it costs nearly as much as a high-end bike, it is worth every penny. With this machine, bike shops don’t have to stock multiple boxes of different types and sizes of spokes, only to figure out that they never quite [...]

Tool Tuesday :: Wheels Manufacturing Hanger Multi Tool

.
The most ubiquitous bicycle tool is easily the multi tool. Nearly every tool company makes one, and most companies offer several models. It has the most common sized hex wrenches, two screwdrivers, and a torx M25 wrench. It’s lightweight and folds up to a compact size. [...]

.
A few weeks back we reviewed a repair stand that is loaded with features. While that repair stand is certainly nice, we realize that not every home mechanic needs such a loaded stand. This week we offer up a repair stand that gets the job done without breaking the bank. The Park Tool PCS-9 repair stand carries a price tag similar to other entry-level repair stands, but what sets it apart is its stability, wide-mouth clamp, and portability. At first [...]

Tool Tuesday :: Park Tool Adjusting Cap Tool

.
For years, the only tools available to remove the adjusting cap on Shimano’s Hollowtech II cranks were plastic. There are now a few metal tools on the market, but Park Tool’s Adjusting Cap Tool is the one we don’t hesitate to rely on. Shimano’s Hollowtech II crank and bottom bracket design relies on the adjusting cap to preload the bearings. This cap rests against the left crankarm and is threaded into the bottom bracket spindle. While this cap only needs [...]
