Ride Food :: Early Morning Workout Energy Bites

.
After being unemployed for a few months, I recently started a new job. While I was not unemployed for long, I quickly adapted to the free time and flexible schedule—especially when it came to my workouts. With my triathlon training I try and fit in at least two swims, two bike rides, and two runs in a week, and that is in addition to yoga and strength training for injury prevention. Now that I am back to working a [...]

Ride Food :: Sweet Potato Chips

.
This isn’t exactly a recipe; it’s more of a snack idea with a million variations on it.  I’m in the business of making yummy, healthy treats to eat on the bike.  These have saved me on more than one occasion. This spring, I’ve embarked on two long, but not outrageously long, mountain bike races in the 15-40 hour range. These routes have had minimal re-supply options so I’ve started both with all the food I’d need, plus ‘emergency’ calories. When [...]

Ride Food: Banana Biscuits

Over the years of making home-made ride snacks, I’ve created some verifiable disasters… bars that wouldn’t stick together, imitation Lara bars wrapped in foil that would subsequently explode and coat everything in its vicinity with goop, and some combinations of ingredients that just simply didn’t taste good. I’ve learned that just because I think something tastes good, it doesn’t actually mean that it tastes good. It’s something along the lines of ‘a taste that only a mother/creator could love’. Recently [...]

Chocolate Yam Cookies

.
There are a million different energy bars on the market.   Everything from unpalatable, dry masses of calories to tasty treats are available. Throughout my riding days, I’ve tried them all, or at least a large majority of them.   When they come in a race schwag-bag, I happily eat them. But I hate shelling out the money to actually buy them.  So I started making my own.  Reading the ingredient labels of pre-existing products and trying to recreate their [...]
