Bike commuting continues to rise, especially in cities

.
Every year, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the share of Americans who bike to work. Although the survey only counts people as bike commuters if they ride to work the majority of days (among other restrictions), it’s the best way to track the growth of bicycling to work. The League of American Bicyclists crunched the latest survey data and found that bike commuting rose slightly (though not significantly), from 0.53% in 2010 to 0.56% in 2011. Since 2000, bike commuting [...]

Green Lane Project moves bicycling forward

.
Bikes Belong is leading the way toward the next generation of bike lanes with the Green Lane Project. The Green Lane Project, launched in late May this year, is working with Austin, Chicago, Memphis, Portland, OR, San Francisco, and Washington, DC to support each city’s development of world-class protected bicycling networks, called green lanes, during the next two years. Green lanes are safe, comfortable spaces for people on bikes on city streets. They are protected from motor vehicles by curbs, [...]

Learning to Fly :: A Girl’s First Dirt Jump

.
I straddled my bike in line on the mound of dirt just behind a boy I guessed to be around 12. Too-big jeans slung low. Stretched out t-shirt. School was out for the summer and the neighborhood pack had converged at the bike park that evening, loitering until their moms called them home for supper. The bigger boys launched off the tops of what seemed to me to be mammoth-sized jumps to the left, the smaller boys rolling the smaller [...]

Bikes Belong in running for $250,000 Chase Community Grant

.
The Bikes Belong Foundation is up for a $250,000 Chase Community Giving Grant. After a few days of voting, we are ranked 14th, just 500 votes outside of the top ten. If we win the grant, it will go to help PeopleForBikes.org reach its goal of one million people (we are at 600,000 supporters now) and to the Green Lane Project, our new campaign to fast-track the installation of protected bike lanes in U.S. cities. Here’s how you can help [...]

Six bloggers to share stories from Green Lane Project cities

.
Bikes Belong’s Green Lane Project aims to change the landscape of urban bicycling in America, starting with six U.S. cities. Now, you’ll be able to follow the progress of these six GLP cities. Six bloggers, one from each of the Green Lane Project’s focus cities, will share stories at GreenLaneProject.org about their communities’ journeys toward more green lanes and better bicycling for anyone who wants to ride. Each blogger plans to post two stories per month about their city. Here’s [...]
