The pandemic reshaped the fitness industry when gyms all over the world were closed. Many people purchased a Peloton bike, and it arguably became the most popular at-home cycling solution with few competitors. But with over 50% of former gym members claiming they will not be returning after all gyms reopen, a considerable opportunity awaits cycling manufacturers. One bike, in particular, the BODi Bike (Formerly MYX II or Beachbody Bike), might be able to battle Peloton for the crown. That is why the GirlBikeLove team couldn’t wait to try this cycle for ourselves. We thoroughly tested this bike and we can’t wait to share what we experienced. Join us as we explore why the MYX II Fitness Bike is a worthy opponent by comparing these bikes in detail.

Images From The Testing

The original MYX bike was discontinued to make way for this new awesome riding experience. One of the most exciting features of theBODi – MYX II is this bike’s connectivity with Beachbody. The MYX II now offers BODCast, which can’t be found anywhere else on the market. BODCast provides users the ability to be seen by trainers in real-time as they take live classes from Beachbody’s BODi platform. Instructors can now give form corrections and encouragement instantly. A sensor is located in the monitor that makes this all possible. As with the original model, this bike also includes a heart rate monitor and purchasers receive personalized heart rate zones to help them reach their specific goals. Additionally, MYX II bike owners can purchase a membership to BODi and Openfit for a variety of exercise options. A BODi (Beachbody Interactive) membership is available for $19.95 in addition to the yearly $99 Beachbody on-demand membership and Openfit is available for $19 per month.

It is no wonder why this bike rated a 4.8 out of 5 with consumers! We loved the construction of this bike and the upgraded features. The addition of BodCast is a total game-changer in the fitness industry. Also, we were impressed with the Customer Service team. When we called in to ask a question, they increased our Beachbody BodCast trial from 7-days to fourteen days.

After a recent price reduction due to the introduction of Peloton’s newest model, this bike retails for $1895. The thirty-pound flywheel smoothly rotates with a belt drive system. This cycle includes 100 levels of magnetic resistance that can challenge riders of all levels.

The Peloton bike touts a 4.8 out of 5 consumer rating. Many reviewers commented about the quality construction that this model offers. Detailed Comparison of Peloton & MYX II

We have discussed the great qualities of each bike individually, but let’s dig in and look at these two indoor cycling options in how they compare to one another.

Resistance

The Peloton offers 100 levels of magnetic resistance. Magnetic resistance requires less maintenance, but stronger riders or elite cyclists can max out resistance levels, leaving them desiring a little more.

The MYX Fitness II Bike offers a friction resistance system. Friction resistance systems require slightly more maintenance than magnetic. The amount of friction resistance available is more significant than a bike that provides predisposed magnetic resistance levels.

Handlebars

The ability to move handlebars up and down and front and back is a critical feature, especially if you are a shorter rider. The MYX Fitness Bike offers 4-way handlebar adjustability, therefore being able to truly accommodate the extensive height range it offers of 4’11”-6’8.” This handlebar adjustability feature is significant because it allows shorter riders to move the handlebars closer to the saddle, enabling proper riding to be maintained instead of slouching, which increases saddle soreness. Riders closer to the top of the height range will also appreciate this feature as sometimes their knees will graze the handlebars while in a standing run if the handlebars cannot move away from the saddle. Unfortunately, the Peloton does not have 4-way adjustability and instead only moves up and down. In addition, the Peloton handlebars cannot move front to back due to the position of their touchscreen. The MYX II accommodated my 5’4” frame better than the Peloton due to the handlebar mobility.

Pedals

As a certified SPINNING instructor, I always recommend that my students invest in cycling shoes if they plan to cycle consistently. Cycling shoes are not only easier on joints, but they allow riders to truly get the most out of their rides because they can both push and pull during a pedal stroke.

As a certified SPINNING instructor, I always recommend that my students invest in cycling shoes if they plan to cycle consistently.

Both the MYX II Fitness Bike and Peloton offer the possibility to use cycling shoes, but they are vastly different. The MYX Bike allows riders to use their standard street shoes with the included toe cages and offers an SPD clip. The SPD cleat is an industry-standard and is available for purchase from any cycling store. The Peloton pedals use a specific clip, the Look Delta, which is not as common.

Touchscreen

Both cycle options offer a touchscreen with the purchase of the bike. The Peloton screen is slightly larger at 22” compared to 21.5” provided by the MYX II Fitness Bike. The original Peloton bike that we are examining in this article does not include a rotating touchscreen but is available with the purchase of the Peloton Bike+. The MYX Fitness Bike does offer a 360-degree swiveling touchscreen.

Apps and Connectivity

The Peloton community is undeniably one of the biggest reasons purchasers select a Peloton bike. With over 5,000 classes On Demand and growing, it is no wonder why the Peloton community has 4.4 million members and believes they will reach 10 million in the near future. Unfortunately, this bike cannot connect with other apps such as Netflix but can integrate with Strava and Fitbit. It also requires a Wi-Fi connection.

The MYX II Fitness Bike offers excellent integration with BODi and Openfit. Riders can take classes either live or on-demand. We loved that in addition to fitness classes in multiple formats, Beachbody understands the importance of nutrition as a large factor in improving health. Members can take advantage of customized meal plans and watch how to prepare healthy meals on the interactive platform. The MYX II bike integrates with Apple Health but does not with Fitbit or Strava. This cycle also requires a Wi-Fi connection.

In my opinion, when looking at the cycling class quality offered between Peloton and the MYX II, I have to say overall, I still prefer taking cycling classes from Peloton. Of course, BODi has a few cycling instructors that I enjoyed, but I feel that the Peloton instructors inspire me to work at a higher training level due to their energy.

Important Note: Openfit and MYXfitness on-demand libraries have been merged into BODi app. So, you can have access to all the 3 platforms with a subscription to the BODi app.

Additional Peloton & MYX Alternatives

Many new bikes are joining the market that are also viable alternatives for purchasers looking for other price points and features. Below are a few of our favorites.

Bowflex C6 / Schwinn IC4

The Bowflex C6 and Schwinn IC4, which are identical since the same manufacturer produces them, offer an incredible product for less than $1,000. They include a belt-drive system, a 40-pound flywheel, and 100 levels of magnetic resistance. They include a heart rate monitor with the purchase and have Bluetooth capability. Both models can also integrate with the Bowflex JRNY application that provides personalized workouts based on your fitness level and instructor-led classes.

Life Fitness IC7

This indoor cycling bike, manufactured by Life Fitness, includes an evenly light-weighted rear flywheel and a unique steel frame design to minimize sweat corrosion. Priced at $3,199, this bike is more expensive than many similar magnetic resistance models. However, the robust technology that is included with this model sets this bike apart from competitors. Life Fitness‘s Coach-by-Color technology not only provides an exciting riding experience but provides real-time interactive metrics to keep the workouts exciting and beneficial. In addition, the free ICG app easily connects with the IC7 cycle and helps riders prepare for FTP tests, track and log workout metrics, and provide various workouts to reach customized goals. Check our hands-on IC7 Review for more insights!

Echelon EX5 & EX5-S

Available for just under $1,300, the Echelon EX5 includes a touchscreen and provides riders with an excellent riding experience. This bike is equipped with 32 levels of magnetic resistance, allowing riders to push their workouts to the limit, whether riders are taking a class from Echelon’s platform or performing a free ride. The EX5S is almost the same bike but with an included 22” HD rotating touchscreen.

NordicTrack Commercial S22i

The NordicTrack S22i is an excellent option and includes a 22” rotating touchscreen. This bike is unique because it automatically adjusts your resistance to reflect the terrain the instructor is describing during class on the Nordic Track platform iFit. This bike is priced at $1,999 and includes a one-year membership to iFit. You can also check our comparison between the S22i and the MYX II bikes.

Who Should Purchase a Peloton Bike?

Peloton offers an incredible riding experience, primarily because of its platform but at a premium price. Potential buyers should already know that cycling is an activity they enjoy, and the bike will be used often, as it is pretty expensive. Riders accustomed to spending money on monthly memberships to specialty cycling studios will find the price more palatable than others that perhaps only take classes at the gym. Also important to note, cyclists who have used magnetic resistance systems before will quickly adapt to the feeling of increasing or decreasing resistance on this bike.

If you thrive on competition, love live classes, then the Peloton and their interactive leaderboard is the right choice. The almost cult-like following of this passionate community helps to engage riders and keeps them coming back and wanting more. If you are looking to feel like part of a team, we believe this is the model for you.

Riders that take classes in studios will prefer the friction resistance and heavy flywheel this bike offers. Also, cyclists of all heights will value that the handlebars move forward and back, but especially those closer to 5” or over 6” tall, allowing maximum comfort.

  1. Do you have to have both apps for the Beach Body bike? I have a BodI subscription already so I wouldn’t have to get any more if I chose this bike but you mentioned Openfit and I am not familiar with that.

    Thank you!

    • Hi Melinda!

Actually, this part of the article needs some update, sorry!

Recently, Beachbody integrated all of its content with the MYX II bike through its applications of OpenFit and BODi (Beachbody On Demand Interactive). So there is only one app now, the BODi app (Beachbody On Demand Interactive).
